With the sudden spurt in COVID 19 cases, most of the pan-India filmmakers are contemplating postponing their film releases, especially those scheduled for the first or second week of January. Many big budget projects like RRR And Jersey has already taken a call after it took a toll on the box office numbers of films like 83. In a recent interaction, 83 director Kabir Khan opened up on going for the OTT route if the trend continues.

The sports-drama film hit the theaters on 24 December 2021 and garnered impressive numbers in the first few days. It stars actor Ranveer Singh in the lead role and is based on the Indian cricket team’s 1983 World Cup victory which is considered one of the most iconic moments in Indian cricket history.

In a recent conversation with Mid-Day, 83 director Kabir Khan opened up about the current situation and his alternate plan if state governments continue to impose restrictions. Even though in the past they had no plans to release the film on OTT, the team is now considering the OTT route as an option.

Kabir Khan spoke about theater restrictions and said, “We don’t know if we will have to shut down tomorrow, or will be given another five to six days’ time. If more restrictions are imposed, we will release the film on the web very soon. But I’m curious [that] People take precautions and go to theaters to watch it.”

He was also disappointed with the film collection so far as he said, “The film was ready for us 18 months back. We wanted people to see it on the big screen because that’s how it was designed. But, in such times we live.” We worked hard to secure a safe location for the film, but on the day of its release, cases spiked. For four days, theaters in Delhi were shut.”
