Aanand L Rai’s Atrangi Re starring Dhanush, Sara Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar was one of the most awaited films of 2021 and has really stood up to the hype it created among fans with its heartwarming story . After watching the film, fans can’t help but talk about the uniqueness and charm in the story, which was penned by Himanshu Sharma.
However, when a film is out, it receives some unwanted criticism along with praise. The same is happening with this recent release, as some group of watchers are now criticizing the film for not doing justice to the mental health issues that the film’s character Rinku Sharma (played by) Sarah) Was.
Talking about these criticisms, during his adaptation with India Today, Aanand L Rai said, “When we made this film, we were feeling fearless and we were enjoying. Nobody even touched this relationship, nobody ever talked about it and we wanted to go for it. Today it has reached the audience and that is what really matters. There has been an argument and that’s what we wanted.”
Adding to the words of Aanand L Rai, Himanshu Sharma, author of Atrangi Re said, “It (mental health) is not the only thing we thought about. There are many other things like love – the debate between perfection and imperfection, the totality of love, what is love. That kind of conflicts with what we expect from our partners compared to real people. We expect them to be the best of the highest quality ones, but the real ones are flawed. So there were a lot of things that the film was trying to say.”
Referring to the criticism the film has received, Himanshu further said, “In the end, it is a film and not a documentary. This isn’t a 500 word essay on mental illness, it’s a movie, it’s all you need to entertain. When we write a film, it has to change its course on many issues, and sometimes some things lag behind, and sometimes it is at the fore. Yes, there is a mental health issue but as a writer and for me happy As a director, saying big things was like a coating of sugar. Watch the movie for what it is and not for what you want. A large number of people watched, they knew what the film was talking about and that’s why we got so much love.”
The director of the film also admitted that the negative criticism the film is getting is not affecting him.
