Actors Will Smith and Martin Lawrence open CinemaCon by talking about their return to the ‘bad boys’ business.
“We’re hyped, we’re excited,” Smith said, reports Variety.
He apologized for not being in Las Vegas for the annual convention of the exhibition industry.
“We’re not sorry we couldn’t be there,” Lawrence told them, noting that they were four weeks into filming the fourth film in the franchise.
“We’re glad we’re not there because we’re here and they’re paying us to be here,” Smith said.
Adil El Arbi and Bilal Fallah, who directed 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life,” are reuniting with Smith and Lawrence in “Bad Boys 4.”
The rest of the ensemble will also include franchise vet Paola Nuñez, Vanessa Hudgens and Alexander Ludwig with Eric Dane of ‘Euphoria’. Chris Bremer wrote the screenplay.
For Smith, it’s a chance to turn the page on the ugliness of the Oscar slapping incident by reprising one of his beloved roles. He was most recently seen in ‘Emancipation’, a drama about a fugitive slave affected by the controversy surrounding his attack on Chris Rock.
The ‘Bad Boys’ series follows Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, two Miami cops with a talent for quips and a lot of civilian and vehicular damage while chasing down drug dealers and low life.
CinemaCon has opened as the movie business is finally getting back to pre-pandemic levels, fueled by hits like this.Avatar: The Way of Water‘ and ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’. CinemaCon Managing Director Mitch Neuhauser took the stage for Elton John’s ‘I’m Still Standing’.
“With all due respect to Elton, it’s not that I’m standing still… It’s that we’re still standing,” Neuhauser said to loud applause. He said it was good to be back in Las Vegas “after all the garbage we’ve gone through” and predicted that “the door is closed on Covid.”
