Specific: Bankside Films acquires world sales rights for Colm Bairéad’s critically acclaimed debut feature cool girl ,a kelin suinn), which won seven Irish Film and TV Awards earlier this year, including Best Film, Director and Lead Actress.
Set in 1981 rural Ireland, the film tells the story of a quiet, neglectful girl who is sent away from her overcrowded, dysfunctional family to live with her mother’s relatives over the summer. She blossoms under his care, but in a home with no secrets, she discovers a painful truth.
The Irish language film is currently releasing in the UK (Curzon) and Ireland (Break Out Pictures) and has crossed €800k at the box office this week, receiving decent reviews. It is a strong contender to be chosen as Ireland’s international Oscar contender next year.
The feature premiered this year at the Berlin Film Festival, winning the Grand Prix of the Generation Keplus International Jury for Best Film. It played at the Dublin International Film Festival where it won the Audience Award and also won the Best Irish Film award at the Dublin Film Critics Circle Awards 2022. It is currently playing in the Galway film Fleece.
Starring newcomer Katherine Clinch in the role of Kat alongside Carrie Crawley, Andrew Bennett, Michael Patrick and Kate Nick Choonaugh.
The film is based on a short story nutritive By Irish writer Claire Keegan, with screenplay by Baird. The film had previously been sold to Madman in Australia and Officin Ubu in Italy.
Pic is produced by Cliona née Churlaoui of Inscéal, the production company she co-founded with Bairéad in 2012. The film was developed and produced as part of the Cine4 Irish-language feature film scheme. It was financed by Screen Ireland, the Irish language broadcaster, TG4, Ireland’s broadcasting authority through its Sound and Vision funding scheme and Section 481 funding.
