Daddy’s Home! ‘Bel-Air’ Finale On Peacock Introduces Will’s Father Played by (SPOILER!)

spoiler ALERT! Don’t read until you’ve seen the season finale Bel Air On the peacock

It took fans some time to meet Will Smith’s dad Lou new prince of bel air (played by Ben Wren). but the peacock Bel Air – as already demonstrated in its first 10 episodes – there is nothing like a ’90s sitcom in which Will Smith played the title role.

Season one finale of drama, Marlon Wayans Appears as Will’s long-lost father Lou (Jabari Bank) Before his unexpected homecoming, Will is convinced by his mother Wye (April Parker Jones) and Uncle Phil (Adrian Holmes) that Lou has abandoned his family; In fact, Lou was serving time in prison and never wanted his son to see him behind bars.

Here, co-showrunners and executive producers TJ Brady and Rashid Newson talk about the show’s decision to introduce Will’s father in the first season (the show has already been picked up for a second year) and his sudden appearance. The family gets in trouble. ,

DEADLINE Why introduce dad so early?

TJ brady Bel-Air is completely re-imagining the Fresh Prince and we wanted to live up to the expectations and not throw it out. Several times throughout the season, Will mentioned not having a father and growing up without a father, and how Uncle Phil fulfilled that role. Sometimes he said it to justify self-destructive behavior, other times to explain why he would keep a distance. We wanted to live up to the audience’s expectations by challenging him, reintroducing this man into his life and discovering that the story he had been told throughout his life, that he had built an identity around, was true. Wasn’t.

Rashid Newson It had to accelerate because it’s one of those things that comes with taking a sitcom and turning it into a drama. In a sitcom you can shed light on the fact that Will was meeting his rich relationship he hadn’t seen in years. In this you have to explain why there was this rift in the family. It is a natural question, those stories have to come to the fore. When Will was 4 years old, his father was convicted of a violent crime and sentenced to prison, and he told Will’s mother and Uncle Phil, ‘Don’t bring my son here. If you bring her down here I won’t come out to see her. I don’t want him to see me like this. I grew up seeing my father in jail and I think it messed me up and I don’t want to do that to my son.’ Uncle Phil and Will’s mother couldn’t tell the 4-year-old that your father was in prison and didn’t want to be seen anymore, so she let him think his father had gone out. Now they are calculating the same because their father is at the door.

TJ brady This is the part that anyone will have a hard time with. When do we tell him the truth? There would probably be no reason to tell him. One day he’ll probably be able to handle it when he grows up. Seventeen is right at the cusp of puberty and adulthood. That was the line they walked and it comes back to create some conflict in the finale.

newsome We are trying to do something that is understandable from all sides. I don’t think they fully understand the loss to Will. In the last two episodes, Will is asked if his father is still alive. He is revolving around the idea that he is dead.

brady One of the deeper things we’re trying to explore with all characters is identity, and how identity develops and is defined and how it can change. Will molded his identity, especially in Philadelphia, largely around how he had to step in to play a role for his mother because his father was not there and did not need him. .

DEADLINE but the whole reunion was blown away.

newsome Will walk outside and leave the mansion. Lu cannot accept his share of responsibility in this. He wants to blame a lot of people, and when he starts raving about Will’s mom, it makes for a huge argument. Won’t stand for it.

Deadline How did you land on Marlon Wayans?

newsome We knew he would be good but also amazing. There are plenty of people who were obvious candidates. But we wanted someone to let the audience react like ‘Okay, wait a minute.’ We wanted it to feel fresh. We didn’t want it to feel like anyone was reprising a role they did in another series that was very similar.

DEADLINE Is Wayans Coming Back for Season 2?

brady I don’t know if he will be a regular or not, but we look forward to seeing him again.

newsome The way it ended, Will and Lou are miles apart. They really go to it. But in Will’s life, his father has to come back, but he’s not the one living in LA and the one you see regularly.
