Mumbai Police on Monday registered an FIR against lyricist Javed Akhtar for his alleged remarks against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). A First Information Report (FIR) was registered at the Mulund police station on the complaint of city lawyer Santosh Dubey. An official of the Mulund police station said that an FIR has been registered under Section 500 (punishment for defamation) of the Indian Penal Code. Last month, the lawyer had sent a legal notice to Javed for allegedly making “false and defamatory” remarks against the RSS in an interview to a news channel.
In a recent interview, Javed drew parallels between Taliban and Hindu extremists. Dubey claimed in his notice that by making such statements, Akhtar has committed an offense under sections 499 (defamation) and 500 (punishment for defamation) of the IPC. The lawyer told PTI that he had earlier sent a legal notice to Javed and asked him to apologize for his remarks, but he failed to do so. Now an FIR has been registered against him on his complaint.
On 3 September, Javed, a former MP, compared the Islamic terrorist organization Taliban to the RSS during a television program. He said, “Just as the Taliban want an Islamic State, Hindus want a nation. These people are of the same mentality – be it Muslim, Christian, Jew or Hindu.” He added, “Of course, Taliban is barbaric, and their actions are condemnable, but all those who support RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal are in the same are like.”
