After the box office success of Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1, Mani Ratnam is all set to take the story forward in the second instalment. As the film draws closer to its release date, actor Chiyaan Vikram has made an exciting revelation. For the unversed, the 2 part film is an adaptation of the epic novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy. Not many know, long before Mani Ratnam, legendary actor and politician Marudhur Gopalan Ramachandran, popularly known as MGR, had announced its adaptation in 1959.
Before turning the book into a big-screen feast, MGR (who died in 1987) gave the official rights to Kamal Haasan. However, the Vikram actor had also planned a two-part film with Rajinikanth, Sathyaraj and Prabhu, but things didn’t work out. Later when he thought of developing the book into a TV series, he approached Chiyaan Vikram, who declined the offer.
During his latest interview with News18, Chiyaan Vikram who played Adita Karikalan in PS2 revealed, “The interesting thing was that long back Kamal sir called me to his office and told me that he would like to produce Ponniyin Selvan. Want to He wanted to do it for television. He said to me, ‘I would like you to do a role…you can do whatever role you want.’ So, I was given a chance to do any of the three roles. I told him that I would read books.
Chiyaan Vikram further added, “He had said, ‘As an actor, I don’t want to do it, but you think about it because it’s for TV and take a call.’ The next day, I went back to him and told him that I will wait for it to come on the big screen. It is very strange that I have always been someone’s brainchild for Ponniyin Selvan. But it is a good idea.”
Ponniyin Selvan: 2 is set to hit the screens on April 28.
