Indian cinema has seen a massive change in business trends over the years and much of it stems from the restrictions on theater operations that came with the pandemic. Part of this drastic change was also related to the OTT release window, which was brought down to 4 weeks just a few months after the arrival of COVID 19. Now, as per the most recent report, multiplex associations and exhibitors of India have decided to bring back the 8-week limit and Ranbir Kapoor’s Shamshera is expected to be the last film to hit OTT platforms within just 4 weeks.

For those unaware, Shamshera is an upcoming drama film which will hit the theaters on 22nd of this month. The film is directed by Karan Malhotra and stars Ranbir as well. Vaani Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt in the lead role. There is a lot of hype about the film as the trailer has left the fans quite surprised.

According to a report in Pinkvilla, after August 1, films will have a gap of 8 weeks between the theatrical release date and the OTT release date. A source close to the publication said, “This has been in discussion within the industry for some time and the guidelines are now implemented by the Multiplex Association. All films releasing from August 1 will have to maintain a gap of at least 8 weeks between theatrical release and OTT premiere. Producers who do not comply with this will not receive theatrical release at the properties of exhibitors who are part of this association. The Multiplex Association of India has interacted with all the producers and they are all on the same page now.

Ranbir Kapoor’s Shamshera is expected to be the last film to follow the 4-week schedule, as the same source mentioned, “Ek Villain team is currently in dispute regarding the OTT premiere window. They are considering the pros and cons of both the steps and will decide on the OTT window by July 15. Shamshera will premiere within 4 weeks around August 20.”

The same source also explained how it’s new OTT Hat for every movie. After Shamshera, may be good for the industry.” The 4-week window had dented the commercial prospects of medium-sized Hindi films, as audiences in this segment of cinema instead spent Rs 400 for a big one. Would have preferred to wait for 4 weeks. Screens. This move may bring them back for a certain segment of films”, he added.
