Isyanov was born on August 20, 1962 in Voskresensk, Russia (then part of the USSR). Attracted to the performing arts from a young age, he enrolled at the Perm Institute of Culture to study directing after graduating from high school in 1980. His studies were interrupted in 1982 when he left to complete two years of compulsory military service in the Soviet Air Force and was stationed in the Russian Far East. After his caricatures of theater actors caught the eye of its director, he worked at the Khabarovsk Theater for two seasons, before joining the highly competitive acting program at the famed Moscow Arts Theater School in 1986. There they became very close friends and often did comedy skits and improv shows with Andrei Panin, who became a top Russian actor before tragically dying in 2013. Isanov taught himself English and also spoke some Spanish, German and French.
After graduation, Isanov took a small part in the 1990 American film Russia House, starring Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer, which was filmed in Moscow. He relocated to the UK in early 1991, where, over the course of several years, he appeared in various TV shows and films, performed a season of Russian plays at the Theater Clyde and toured nationally and internationally with the English Shakespeare Company. .
