NS Red Sea International Film Festival has determined the lineup for its inaugural edition which runs from 6–15 December in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The roster includes 138 titles from 67 countries and will open with a musical romance directed by MGM’s Joe Wright. Cyrano. The film had earlier starred Telluride and Rome and was released domestically on 31 December. Among the highlights is also Netflix’s Venice Film Festival drama. lost daughter. The conclusion of the Red Sea festival is the world premiere of Egyptian director Amar Salama bara el manhago.
Sixteen films will run in the competition which focuses on films from Asia, Africa and the Arab world (see full list below). They will compete in the Golden User Awards as well as in the individual directing, acting and writing categories. Title screening includes Honey Abu-Asadi‘s Huda’s SalonMILF Georgian Oscar Submission Brighton 4th and seek shelter hit the road.
Kaleem Aftab, Director of International Programming for the Fest, says, “Telling stories from a fresh perspective, the Red Sea Competition is a celebration of the continued success of established filmmakers and the exciting new work coming from emerging talent. Selecting films is a constant force of filmmaking. As well as pointing towards where the future of the industry is headed.”
Along with the Red Sea Competition, Red Carpet Galas and special presentations, the festival will host a range of cinema in the following sections: Festival Favorites, New Saudi/New Cinema, Red Sea Treasures, Red Sea Arabian and International Spectacular, Red Sea Next Generation, Red Sea Immersive and Red Sea Episodic.
The festival will celebrate women and honor Saudi filmmaker Haifa Al-Mansour and Egyptian actress Laila Eloi. Veteran Egyptian actress and singer Yusra will also give a masterclass while Catherine Deneuve is scheduled to attend the festival.
Discussions providing insight into her career will be followed by Haifa al-Mansour, Tunisian actress Hend Sabri and Franco-Argentine director Gaspar Noe. The festival will honor former French Culture Minister Jacques Lange who is the President of the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris.
Other films at the festival are by Maggie Gyllenhaal. lost daughter and Nabil Ayuch’s Casablanca Beats Which premiered in Cannes.
The International Spectacular Double Gala Presentation begins with Academy-award winner Giuseppe Tornatore’s latest, ennio, and the fantasy thriller of Ana Lily Amirpour Monalisa and the Blood Moon.
Red Sea Sock, the festival’s industry market, will present a program of curated events to promote co-production, international distribution and new business opportunities. It will run alongside the festival from December 8-11 and will feature a masterclass with Chilean editor Andrea Chignoli and a panel with Palestinian filmmakers Hani Abu-Assad, Annemarie Zakir and Rashid Mashrawi. The souk will also showcase more than 20 local and regional exhibition companies, including buyers, sales agents, film commissions, distributors and exhibitors. Immediately following the souk, the festival will hold Talent Day, a two-day initiative designed to support the development of the next generation of Saudi filmmakers.
