Shahid Kapoor opens up about the Kabir Singh controversy and characterisation; Says, “I’ve witnessed physical abuse as a child”
Shahid told Mid-Day, “I have seen physical abuse in my childhood. I understand what you are talking about. But it was a dysfunctional love story between a very ordinary girl and a very brilliant, talented, aggressive, turbulent boy. And things like this keep happening on a day-to-day basis.”
Shahid further explained that he saw the character of Kabir Singh not as a ‘hero’ or ‘anti-hero’, but simply as the central character of a narrative. He emphasized that not every hero is a morally upright person, drawing a parallel to the character of Devdas, who physically abused Paro. Shahid clarified that despite the flawed nature of the protagonist of the film Devdas, he has a positive opinion towards the film.
Shahid also said, “My point is that haven’t we all messed up in love?” Are we all perfect humans? Everyone deserves a second chance, no matter how bad they are. If you’re saying, ‘This guy is a great guy! He did everything right. No one said so. You see the promo, every line in that promo says, ‘She is upset. That’s a problem. He has anger management issues. He cannot be accepted by society and is self-destructive. So right at the start of the promo, you’re establishing that this is a film about such a character. At no point was it said that he is such a great person. But I think (for some people) it becomes about right and wrong. But I think all kinds of things happen in life and we can show them.
Meanwhile, Shahid Kapoor was last seen in the film bloody dad Which was released on JioCinema which was directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. He was previously seen in the Raj & DK directed web series Farzi which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. He will soon be seen in an untitled Maddock film opposite Kriti Sanon. The poster of the film is out and it is expected to release on 7th December.
