In a conversation with IANS, the actress explains why there is a need to change the entire conversation about age-appropriate roles of female and male actors, adding that each one of her choices was unique.
While the representation of female characters throughout the conversation of ages Bollywood Post the release of ‘Badhaai Ho’ started in 2018, the trend of casting older actors with much younger female actresses still continues. On the other hand, female superstars have found their place in female-centric films.
Sonali Kulkarni played Hrithik’s mother in ‘Mission Kashmir’ and Salman’s mother in ‘Bharat’; Although Salman is 5 years older than Sonali. She also played the role of Farhan Akhtar’s mother in the film ‘Toofan’.
Sharing her opinion on the subject, Sonali told IANS, “For me, whatever choice I made, it was for a reason. If I talk about my first film ‘Cheluvi’ in which I played the role of a tree. Is, yes, not even a man or a woman but a tree, figuratively; it was because of the story, and the director Girish sir. When I played the role of mother in ‘Mission Kashmir’ I played the character saw the graph.
“Yes, in the year 2000 I was too young to play Hrithik’s mother, but a big part of the story was my journey as the mother of a young child and the wife of Sanjay Dutt playing a police officer. So I didn’t limit or let go of the opportunity to play such an interesting character, just because I had a few scenes where the grown-up kid was eventually played by Hrithik.”
Sonali Kulkarni shares, “It was the same with her” movie In ‘Bharat’ also I was playing the role of Jackie Shroff’s wife. What happened during Partition and how Janaki Devi’s character went through was an important part of the story. So for me, whatever choice I made, there was no formula behind it, it was the demand of the narrative. I am lucky that despite playing those characters on-screen, I have never been stereotyped as I have been offered films like ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, ‘Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya’ among many others. So I think there is a need to change the conversation of playing mother on screen and playing age-appropriate roles.”
Sonali played the role of a journalist in the web series ‘The Whistleblower’. She will also be seen in the new season of ‘Crackdown’ and Samit Kakkar’s ‘Dharavi Bank’.
When asked about casting male superstars as opposed to actresses much younger than her, Sonali Kulkarni said, “I think we only highlight the three Khans of Bollywood – Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan. I Saying that while he has started playing on-screen characters that show off his gray hair, Saif Ali Khan is also a Khan and he is making some great choices and giving some great performances and age-appropriate roles. Huh. “
“We need to again focus on actors like him who are really great talents,” he added.
