The curious case of Dua Zehra vs her father Mehdi Kazmi has shook the nation with its twists and turns. From the day Dua went missing from her home in April, reappeared as a married girl with 21-year-old Zaheer Ahmed and the legal battle between Dua and her parents, things have been strange and curious.
The Sindh High Court earlier held Dua’s marriage to be legal and allowed her to live with her husband. Dua’s age turned out to be 17 years, medical examination was done on the orders of Sindh High Court. However, according to official documents, his age is 14 years. Dua’s father had approached the Supreme Court of Pakistan to get his daughter back.
A three-member Supreme Court bench today reserved its verdict, before it observed that none other than a girl can challenge a marriage in a court of law. Even his father has no right to do so. He asked Mehdi Kazmi what he wanted. He replied that he wanted the decision of the Sindh High Court to be reversed and that his daughter should be back with him.
Just before the pronouncement of the verdict, Mehdi Kazmi’s lawyer withdrew his petition. However, the Supreme Court has said that the matter does not fall within their purview and the medical board deciding Dua’s age should be challenged in the Sindh High Court. The matter was shelved and Dua was allowed to live with her parents or husband and was given a choice.
