Amazon Studios, Bobby Shriver Inc. and Double Nickel Entertainment are producing the upcoming drama based on Jonathan Haar’s New Yorker article along with Foxx. The producers are Bobby Shriver and Double Nickel’s Adam Richman and Janet Kahn. Datari Turner is also producing. The film is based on a true story, when the owner of a bankrupt funeral home decides to sue a rival businessman over a handshake deal, the owner hires a flamboyant lawyer to handle the case.
Bates wrote and directed the novelette, which won the Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Director at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. He also received a Gotham Award nomination for the film. Her 2010 Tribeca Film Festival breakout documentary The Career in Africa tells the inspiring story of an HIV-positive and expectant mother trying to save her child from being born with HIV/AIDS.
Oscar winner Jones has been removed by CAA.
