Tribeca Festival announced its lineup of short fiction, documentaries and animated films as well as music videos across 12 programs on Tuesday.
Today’s lineup for this year’s festival, taking place June 7-18, includes 62 shorts, eight music videos and six special screening shorts in competition from a total of 91 filmmakers from 25 countries. The program, which was curated from a record-breaking 8,096 total submissions this year, includes 48 world premieres, three international premieres, two North American premieres, one US premiere and 22 New York premieres, with six alumni of the festivals returning are for around the time. Topics highlighted in the lineup include love, family ties, LGBTQ+ stories, “expressions of black freedom,” Latin America, and resilience.
Notable shorts to watch include the Harry Holland directed last Call, starring Tom Holland; Alden Ehrenreich’s directorial debut, shadow brother sunday, from writer-director Alex Lawther for those in trouble, starring Emma D’Arcy; Sean Schiavolin’s Documentary to my fatherspotlighting coda star Troy Kotsur’s relationship with his father; Nathan Morris’s Rom-Com my eyes are up here with Jillian Mercado; and Francesca Scorsese fish out of water, Then, there’s Lauren Finerman FlowerProduced by and starring Misty Copeland, which will be screened as a special event at Spring Studios in its world premiere.

Recipients of Tribeca Festival Awards for Best Narrative Short, Documentary Short and Animated Short are eligible for consideration in the short film category of the Academy Awards, provided the films comply with Academy rules. Since the Tribeca Festival’s 2001 inception, 36 shorts emanating from Tribeca have gone on to be nominated, with 11 claiming a statuette. Tribeca specifically presents the Student Visionary Award to a rising filmmaker with outstanding talent and potential.
Tribeca Festival is curated by Kara Cusumano, Festival Director and VP of Programming; artistic director Frederick Boyer; VP of Programming Sharon Cloud and VP of Shorts Programming, Thompson; senior programmers Liza Domnitz, Faridah Gbadamossi, and Jarrod Nees; programmers Jose F. Rodriguez, Casey Barron, Jason Gutierrez, and Jonathan Penner; VP of Games and Immersives Casey Baltes and Immersive Curators Ana Brzezicka; Davey Gardner, Curator of Audio Storytelling; music programmer Vincent Kasus; and Paula Weinstein, chief content officer, along with a team of associate programmers.
