In the last 3-4 years, we have seen a sudden rise in films based on real life, with nationalism as a driving force. Surprisingly, these cases have done incredible at the box office, despite venturing into slightly off-beat territory. Due to the changed political situation of the country, the trend of such films has allegedly derailed a bit and we have often seen controversial debates on it. Some think that it is favoring those who are in power and call it ‘propaganda’, while others believe that the rise of such films is an empowerment of Indian cinema.
The trend started with Uri: The Surgical Strike, which was based on the 2016 Uri attack. Starring Vicky Kaushal and others, the film witnessed a phenomenal response and went on to become one of the best-ever successes at the Indian box office. This military drama, released in 2019, had earned a tremendous amount of 244.06 crores.
Another film that achieved historic success was The Kashmir Files, which released last year. Helmed by Vivek Agnihotri, the film made a lot of headlines for both negative and positive reasons. It revolves around the 1990 exodus of Kashmiri Hindus. 252.50 cr.
The latest example to join the list is The Kerala Story. We do not need to describe anything about it as the film is fresh in the mind of the audience as it has just completed one month in the theatres. It is said to be based on real-life events and the plot is about women from Kerala who are forcibly converted to Islam and forced to join ISIS. TKS was dragged into a controversial controversy over its claims, but that did not stop it from emerging as a huge box office success. TKS still running in theaters has earned 238.27 crores So far.
While these three films turned out to be stupendous at the box office, there are a few films with huge theatrical potential that went straight to OTT.
One of the biggest OTT hits. sher shah was released directly on the web amid the Covid uncertainty. The film proved to be a huge success, with its songs becoming chartbusters. If given a theatrical release, it will be a contender in the 200 crore club in India.
Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl is another film which released directly on OTT and became a success. Even considering the positivity surrounding it, it had a shot at becoming a good box office affair.
